Scoring goals is not difficult for Haaland
According to legend Alan Shearer, the striker will break his record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season and could end the season with 60 goals across all competitions.
“As I wrote in May 2022, Haaland is a goal-scoring machine, quick, direct, physically strong, good at battling, can score with both feet, and picks excellent positions,” Shearer commented on The Athletic on April 9th.
With a brace in Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Southampton in the 30th round of the Premier League on April 8th, Haaland has reached 30 goals in the Premier League this season. He is the third striker to achieve this feat in his first season in the league, after Andy Cole (34 goals in the 1993-1994 season) and Kevin Phillips (30 goals in the 1999-2000 season). He is also one of the most expensive football players in the world.

Norwegian striker Haaland is only four goals behind the record of 34 goals in a season in the Premier League held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole when the league had a total of 42 matches. The record for the most goals scored in a season over 38 games belongs to Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian star who scored 32 goals in the 2017-2018 season.
Haaland has scored 30 goals in 27 matches in the Premier League, which is fewer than any other player in the league’s history in their first 27 matches. Only eight players in the top tier of English football, the most recent being Jimmy Greaves in 1961, have scored over 40 goals in a single season.
Throughout the season, Haaland has scored 44 goals in just 37 matches across all competitions. In the top five European leagues, Haaland and Mbappe are the top scorers in clubs. Haaland is 13 goals ahead of the next closest scorer, with Kylian Mbappe of PSG having scored 31 goals in 35 matches.
“I wonder how many people thought I was exaggerating when I wrote almost a year ago that Haaland would score 40 goals at Man City,” Shearer expressed. “Man City already scored a lot of goals and now they add an outstanding striker to a team that has incredible creativity. Even I was being stingy with Haaland. He’s almost perfect and has surpassed the milestone of 40 goals this season.”
The Norwegian striker is showing that scoring goals is easy for him. Erling Haaland is constantly breaking records with his lightning-fast pace of scoring against opponents.
The Norwegian striker has scored 10 goals in the recent 195 minutes of play in 3 matches, with a rate of fewer than 20 minutes per goal. In his last 4 matches across all competitions, Haaland has also scored 11 goals, averaging almost 3 goals per game.

Throughout his club career, Haaland has scored 200 goals in just 243 matches, with a rate of 0.82 goals per game. Furthermore, there have only been 3 seasons in this century where a player has scored more than 1.15 goals per 90 minutes without penalty kicks. Those were Messi in the 2012/13 season and Haaland in the 2019/20 and 2022/23 seasons.
Haaland’s return to peak scoring form is a hopeful point for Man City to win the treble this season. They still have a chance to win the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League.
Man City will play at least 12 games in the remainder of the season, including nine in the Premier League, a match against Sheffield United in the FA Cup semifinals on April 22, and two crucial matches against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals on April 11 and 19. If they reach the finals of both competitions, Pep Guardiola’s squad will play a total of 16 games.
Therefore, Shearer believes that Haaland will easily break his and Andy Cole’s record of 34 goals in a Premier League season, and even surpass the 50-goal mark this season. The former Newcastle striker even emphasized that if Haaland maintains his fitness until the end of the season, he could equal the all-time English football record for most goals in a season held by Dixie Dean of Everton, who scored 60 goals in just 39 matches in the 1927-28 season. “It’s frightening,” Shearer said about Haaland’s scoring ability.
On April 11, Man City will face Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Haaland has already scored 33 goals in 25 Champions League matches, breaking the record for the fewest matches needed to reach 30 goals in the competition.
