Golden Shoe 2022-23: Haaland on top in Europe
There are multiple Golden Boots up for grabs across Europe’s leading leagues. However, there is only one Golden Shoe that can be won each season by the continent’s most successful striker.
The pursuit of this coveted award has begun once more, with some legendary frontmen leading the charge to claim this individual honor and set themselves apart from their fellow attackers.
In the previous season, Robert Lewandowski, who moved from Bayern Munich to Barcelona, secured the top position with 35 goals in the league, with Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema, and Ciro Immobile not far behind.
However, the race for the European Golden Shoe for the 2022/23 season seems to have found its winner very early on. There, young star Erling Haaland outshines the entire rest of the continent.
In his first season with Man City, Erling Haaland immediately showed his “deadly” potential. With 27 goals in 25 games, the striker wearing the number 9 shirt for the current Premier League champions became “unbeatable” in individual goal-scoring races.

In the Premier League, the closest player to Erling Haaland is Harry Kane. Despite scoring relatively regularly with 18 goals, Kane still can’t catch up with his 8-year younger counterpart.
But this is not just the story of the Premier League. More than that, on the European stage, no striker is really chasing Erling Haaland. In the race for the European Golden Shoe, the former Dortmund striker is “in a league of his own”.
With 27 goals in the Premier League, a league with a coefficient of 2, Haaland currently has 54 points. Victor Osimhen is having the most explosive season of his career, with top clubs pursuing him for a rumored price of 100 million euros. However, the Napoli striker has “only” scored 19 goals or 38 points. There is a large gap between the leader and the second-place contender.
The player closest to Erling Haaland in terms of goals is Amahl Pellegrino of Bodo/Glimt in the Norwegian league. Pellegrino has scored 25 goals, but the Norwegian league only has a coefficient of 1.5, so his points total is 37.5. However, the league has ended and Pellegrino cannot improve his record.
Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are next with 18 goals and 36 points each. Meanwhile, the two-time reigning Golden Shoe winner, Robert Lewandowski, has only scored 15 goals and has 30 points. The season still has many games left, but it is difficult for “Lewy” to win his third consecutive title.

Haaland’s superiority is demonstrated by the fact that his goal tally is equal to the combined total of Marcus Rashford and Lionel Messi. This is considered Rashford’s best season, but the Manchester United striker has only scored 14 goals in the Premier League.
Similarly, Messi has played much better in his second season with PSG. In Ligue 1, the new FIFA Best Player has scored 13 goals. Thus, the combined performance of both Rashford and Messi is only equal to Haaland’s alone.
